Democrat as an adjective

Thu Feb 01, 2007 at 07:23:33 PM PDT

The media finally took a little bit of notice of the Republican practice of insulting the Democratic Party by refusing to use the correct name of the party.  To make a very tiny point that they don't think we are democratic, they instead incorrectly use Democrat as an adjective.

Media Matters has cited several media outlets that underplayed how often Bush has used Democrat as an adjective.  They praised a few for indicating this was not the first time.  The Washington Post said Bush did it "a lot," and the Los Angeles Times said that Bush did it 22 times in the past year.

Even that, though, is vastly underreporting what has been happening.

I have recorded 356 times that Bush has done this in 190 appearances as president.  That only counts times it has come from his own mouth -- I am not counting documents written by staff that appear on whitehouse.gov.

In 2006, Bush did this 170 times in 54 appearances.

Read below the fold for the list of all the cases I have documented.

Here is a record of times that Bush has used Democrat as an adjective.  A few words of context is provided with each quote.  The titles of each appearance link to the source material at whitehouse.gov.

As long as this list is, it is not exhaustive -- this is how much I could do before being exhausted.  I was still finding more instances when I gave up looking.

Update: there is another occurrence shown in the UCSB database.  The transcript at whitehouse.gov shows him saying "Democratic Party," but the video clip also at whitehouse.gov clearly shows him saying "Democrat Party."  I suspect many more cases like this could be found, but I have chosen to stick with my original numbers based purely on White House transcripts.
